A machine used since ancient times for the extraction of minerals is known as a sugar mil juices from different agricultural products, mainly sugar cane. It is a mill thatpressure means extracts the juice from the cane for the manufacture of sugar and panela(mainly in Colombia).
The name trapiche was given to these emeralds by miners from the Peñas Blancas area, this because, like the sugar mill, emeralds show a central core that gives off six rays, appearing to be shaped like a star.
It was the French mineralogist Emile Bertrand who made them known in 1879 at a meeting of the Société Géologique de France.
Due to its rarity, the Trapiche emerald tends to acquire a high value, however, it is not very common to find it in jewelry since it is not yet so well known but its rarity makes it a unique stone that can lead to incredible designs like the earrings in the photograph.
For the design of this jewel, 18k white gold and diamonds were used, materials that due to their clarity contrasts with the black rays of the emerald and in turn helps highlight the intense green color.
