Lot 45
ICONIC 1960's WWII Photo VJ DAY in TIMES SQUARE by ALFRED EISENSTAEDT in 1945, 8" x 10". CLASSICArguably the most famous photograph ever taken is this shot titled "V-J Day in Times Square" as captured by legendary photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt for Life magazine. It portrays an American sailor kissing a woman in a white dress on "Victory over Japan Day" (V-J Day) in Times Square in New York City, on August 14, 1945. Eisenstaedt was photographing a spontaneous event during the celebrations so he did not have an opportunity to get the names and details. Because of such, many people have claimed to be the mystery man and woman over the years as the photo's allure and iconic status grew. The offered photo is a later-generation example that was made in the 1960's for a look back at the event. It was used in newspaper publication several times with two newspaper clippings affixed on the reverse as well as several stamp dates, the earliest that reads FEB 19 1967. A true period TYPE I original of this photo made by Eisenstaedt and Life magazine in 1945 would easily run you six-figures (and we have a buyer if you have one) ! Here is a far more accessible alternative representing one of the definitive images of the 20th Century.
