Lot 26
This exceptional offset lithograph of Jean-Baptiste-Simion Chardin's "Saying Grace" (1740) is framed in a Dutch Ripple frame and has a dimensional crackle finish to resemble an oil painting. Chardin (1699-1779) was an 18th century French painter. Today, he is considered as the master of still life. In Chardin's eulogy, he was remembered for having once said, "One uses colors, but paints with feeling."
Chardin is renowned for his scenes which depicted intimate realism and a tranquil atmosphere. The image depicts a middle class family saying grace before their meal. Chardin was meticulous in the composition of this piece, as the triangular structure of the figures alone creates dynamism. There is also the use of the rule of thirds, in which the varying elements are balanced throughout the canvas, rather than crowding the center.
In 1740, Chardin presented "Saying Grace" to Louis XV. The Louvre made its first acquisitions of his work in the 1860s. While Chardin created multiple variations of this piece, one of the original "Saying Grace" paintings can be seen hanging on the walls in the Louvre as part of the museum's permanent collection.
