Description:

Authentic photograph in cotton paper with dimensions Approx. 8" x 3.5".

This antique / vintage image in New York is an original creation of the time (between 1900 to 1950s) taken and printed by Louis Jacob Curtman. He was a PhD Professor of Chemistry in New York and an active experimental photographer. Mr. Curtman was author of books in Qualitative Chemical Analysis during the first quarter of the 20th C. when he was a professor in Chemistry in The City College of New York.

Louis Jacob Curtman experimented and investigated photography process especially of photography chemical toning. The means of toning photography were later industrialized by producers like Kodak and applied by important artists like Ansel Adams.

After reviewing Mr. Curtman’s photographic archives (including prints, positives and negatives) we found that the compositions used by L. J. Curtman were his own photos with views of the city of New York, family photos including portraits, and some of his trips to Europe. The inclination of the compositions taken by L. J. Curtman were very tonal and romantic.

In this case, we can make sure the authorship of these photos and the important historical content not only for their compositions, but also for their innovative and experimental value of their time.
