About the Artist: “What makes you push the shutter has to do with seeking a kind of perfection, a harmony in the world,” photographer Sylvia Plachy has said. Plachy is master at noticing moments that speak to larger truths in life and shooting them with her signature Holga camera, which lends her images an eerie atmospheric quality. Her portraits and photo essays find humanity through intimate glimpses into many ways of life; her images of the people, places, and even animals of New York City have been regularly featured in publications including the Village Voice and The New Yorker, and her work has won her a Guggenheim Fellowship and the admiration of many. “She makes me laugh and she breaks my heart,” Richard Avedon once said of Plachy. “She is moral. She is everything a photographer should be.”
